Born 1936 in Piraeus, lives in Rome (Instalations, Arte Povera)
In his "Metamorfosi" (Metamorphoses) Jannis Kounellis aims to visualise history, to make us aware of the different layers of tradition on which we move and in which culture, represented by the fragments of a statue of Apollo, is partially stored and conserved.
Traces of soot indicate fire, whose advantageous but also destructive force is what makes cultural change and historical development possible at all.
The traffic sign represents an elementary sign language such as is to be found both at the beginning and the end of all cognisance and civilisation.
In 1984 Kounellis installed a total of five works at the Hallen für neue Kunst, between which there are close affiliations. ...
